SIOTH® is Integration Objects’ Industrial IT-OT-IoT platform, built on distributed services including protocol connectors, messaging, Web APIs, a historian and HMI, often deployed on remote sites. This project aims to introduce end-to-end observability using OpenTelemetry, providing a unified health view and correlation across services so that failures and resource leaks can be detected promptly and diagnosis can be automated.
Keywords
Observability, OpenTelemetry, logging, metrics, distributed tracing, IIoT, SCADA, .NET/C#.
OpenTelemetry capabilities
- Unified logs, metrics and traces correlated by trace context.
- Vendor-neutral OTLP export to monitoring backends.
- .NET SDK with automatic and custom instrumentation.
- Collector for filtering, enriching, sampling and buffering telemetry.
- Semantic conventions and low-overhead sampling.
Main topics
- Audit SIOTH logging and define an observability standard.
- Instrument SIOTH components with the OpenTelemetry .NET SDK.
- Deploy a Collector pipeline with dashboards and alerts.
- Validate the solution using fault-injection tests and overhead measurement.
Deliverables
- Source code for the instrumented components.
- Collector configuration, dashboards and alert rules.
- Project report, design report and test reports.
Expected results
- Centralized, real-time view of SIOTH health.
- Early failure detection and faster troubleshooting.
- Minimal impact on real-time data acquisition.
